Greece trip, Days 5 and 6 (Kos)

On July 9 we took a ferry from Rhodes to Kos. It had several stops, so we didn't get to Kos until about noon, but our plane for Crete the next day didn't leave until the evening, so we had a good chunk of time in Kos. And it was beautiful! Here is the view from our hotel. You can see Turkey from it!

This is what you see right off the port - part of the old fortress, aka Castle of the Knights (yeah, same Knights from Rhodes also came here).

There are also a lot of cool buildings here. And a nice pedestrian area. and then all of a sudden you walk up on some ancient ruins.

the xysto, an ancient gymnasium

the nymphaem, which the guidebook says used to have "lavish latrines". hmm.

The "Western Excavation"

Check out this mosaic. I don't know who the fighters at the bottom are, but I am guessing the fat guy on the donkey is Dionysus (or Bacchus if this is Roman). makes sense since the ruins of the Temple of Dionysus was down the road.

My guess would be that this is Hercules fighting the boar, but who knows. Also, hearts?

the Odeon

After all that sightseeing, we decided to hit the beach! Which beach? the one right across from our hotel room! Haha! It was pretty rocky, but we got to swim in the Mediterranean Sea, so who cares?!

Then we did a little more sightseeing on our way to dinner.

Hippocrates' Tree, under which he used to teach his students the art/science of medicine

The bridge that leads to the entrance to the castle

We ate dinner here - Nick the Fisherman (by Larry?)
It was delicious, super fresh seafood!

This is what the bill came on :)

The next day we went inside the castle, around the ancient agora, and then up to the Asklepeion, the former hospital and medical school started by the students of Hippocrates.

Apparently roped off areas aren't as universal a language as you might think *facepalm*

Then we ate lunch and went to the airport!
