On July 8 we flew from Athens to Rhodes. Rhodes City was really cool. Well, I should say Old Rhodes, since we really didn't get to see much of the newer area. But Old Rhodes was awesome enough. It is a walled medieval city that has been inhabited by numerous groups of people, including ancient Greeks, Romans, the Knights of the Order of St. John (aka Knights of Hospitalier?), the Ottomans, and Italians before officially joining Greece in 1947 (yes, I have my guidebook open for that, I am not that good with dates). And you can see influences from each in the city. Especially the Knights with the Grand Masters' Palace. The coolest part was just walking around the city and looking at all the old building. Oh, including our hotel! It was built into the historic wall surrounding Old Town!
Here is a picture of the wall around the city.

One of the gates into the city. They all have names, but I don't remember them. |
